Trying to buy an item you don't have the gold for currently reads "You don't have XYZ gold!"
Perhaps displaying the amount of gold you're short would be a bit more helping? The more info the better!
Say I've got 5,000 gold on me and I try to buy the Caravel. A nag reading "You need 1,500 more gold!" might would nice.
